Common questions about SATs dates

Are SATs results used for secondary school admission?
No. KS2 SATs results are not used for secondary school admission in England. They measure school performance and help secondary schools understand incoming pupils' prior attainment. Children do not pass or fail SATs.
When should my child start revising?
Most schools begin focused SATs preparation from January of Year 6. Starting at home from September or October allows children to build confidence gradually rather than cramming in the final weeks. Short daily sessions of 10–15 minutes are significantly more effective than long infrequent ones.
What happens if a child misses a SATs paper?
If a child is absent due to illness, schools may administer the paper on a different day that week, subject to STA guidelines. Results are not usually affected — schools are required to report whatever results they have.
When are SATs results published?
Schools typically receive results in July, a few weeks before the end of the school year. They share these with parents in the Year 6 end-of-year report.
Is there a SATs paper for Writing?
No. Writing is teacher-assessed — teachers judge each child's work against national standards throughout the year. There is no external Writing exam paper.
